What You’ll Learn

  • Lesson 1: Stop Thinking In Boxes
  • Lesson 2: Connecting the 5 CAGED Shapes
  • Lesson 3: Finding Chords Anywhere Instantly
  • Lesson 4: Why Scales Finally Make Sense
  • Lesson 5: Seeing The Entire Fretboard

Lesson 1: Stop Thinking In Boxes

Lesson Summary:

  • The same chord connects across the entire fretboard.
  • Root notes are the foundation of the CAGED system.
  • Move the root notes to play the same shapes in any key.
  • Everything builds on top of the chord.

Practice Exercise:

  • Play a D major chord in all five CAGED shapes.
  • Play a G major chord in all five CAGED shapes.

You Got It When:

  • You can find the same major chord across the neck and recognize the five positions as connected versions of the same chord.

Lesson 2: Connecting The 5 CAGED Shapes

Lesson Summary:

  • Every CAGED shape overlaps with the next.
  • Shared notes are what connect the fretboard.
  • Arpeggios make the connections easier to see.
  • Pentatonics bridge the shapes across the neck.

Practice Exercise:

  • Find the overlap between each pair of shapes (C→A, A→G, etc).
  • Play the arpeggios through each connection.
  • Connect the shapes using the pentatonic scale.

You Got It When:

  • You can move from one CAGED position into the next and clearly see where the two shapes overlap.

Lesson 3: Finding Chords Anywhere Instantly

Lesson Summary:

  • Every chord can be played in multiple positions.
  • Chord tones (1, 3, 5) form the foundation of every major chord.
  • Arpeggios reveal the chord tones in each CAGED shape.
  • Different positions create different voicings and sounds.

Practice Exercise:

  • Build major chords in each CAGED shape using the arpeggio and 3-string triads.
  • Practice a I–IV progression in D major (D → G).
  • Play the progression in one position, then repeat it in every CAGED shape.

You Got It When:

  • You can play the same I–IV progression in multiple areas of the neck instead of automatically returning to one familiar position.

Lesson 4: Why Scales Finally Make Sense

Lesson Summary:

  • Every scale is built from a chord shape.
  • The pentatonic scale adds the 2nd and 6th to the arpeggio.
  • The major scale adds the 4th and 7th to the pentatonic.
  • Think in layers: Chord → Arpeggio → Pentatonic → Major Scale.

Practice Exercise:

  • Play the arpeggio, pentatonic, and major scale in all five CAGED shapes.
  • Focus on seeing how each layer builds on the previous one.

You Got It When:

  • You can look at a CAGED position and see the chord, arpeggio, pentatonic, and major scale as layers of the same shape — not separate patterns.

Lesson 5: Seeing The Entire Fretboard

Lesson Summary:

  • The five CAGED positions form one connected fretboard.
  • Chords, arpeggios, and scales all exist within each CAGED shape.
  • Real fretboard freedom comes from connecting the positions.
  • Moving across the neck becomes natural when you see the entire system.

Practice Exercise:

  • Play a I–IV–V progression in D major (D–G–A) through all five CAGED positions.
  • Mix positions together instead of staying in a single shape.
  • Solo over the progression by targeting the 1–3–5 chord tones, then connect them with arpeggios and pentatonics.

You Got It When:

  • You can move between CAGED positions while playing or soloing without feeling trapped inside a single box.

Ready To Connect The Entire Fretboard?

The challenge isn’t understanding the concept.

It’s remembering it every time you pick up the guitar.

That’s exactly why I created the CAGED Mastery Bundle — so the entire system stays in front of you while you practice.
